The UK’s aspiration to build the first nuclear fusion powerplant used for commercial purposes has gone digital. A digital counterpart of the reactor is currently being constructed as part of plans to integrate fusion energy into the grid by 2040.

The power plant, which attempts to realize the enormous potential of fusion energy, will be designed using the virtual model. Fusion is frequently referred to as the “holy grail” of energy sources due to its ability to produce large amounts of clean energy. Sadly, it’s also incredibly complicated. Only minuscule amounts of fusion power have ever been produced in decades of experiments.

The UK’s Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is collaborating with Intel, Dell, and Cambridge University to develop the digital twin in order to hasten the process.

The reactor will be developed by scientists using the virtual model. AI and supercomputing will be used to run in-depth modeling and simulations in the system to support their efforts.

The UKAEA team will modify their designs when new data and technology become available while working within the digital environment, often known as the industrial metaverse.

The digital twin is the most recent step in making the UK a center for fusion energy on a worldwide scale. Grant Shapps, the nation’s secretary of energy security, praised the project’s contribution to the mission.

With the potential for more affordable, greener, and — most importantly — more secure energy, he said, “this new collaboration with our world-renowned universities and tech companies ensures the UK solidifies its reputation as a science superpower.”
